The Bay Area-based singer Kelly Finnigan is a soul man, through and through. His album of original soul tunes on Colemine Records is proof that everything old really can be new again. His musician father, Mike Finnigan, played keyboards for luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker and Bonnie Raitt, kept the house filled with music, but the younger Finnigan was initially resistant to learning music. We’re really glad he fell into it. His soaring, earnest vocals hearken back to the days when soul music dominated radio, bright with horns, longing clinging to every note. Soul music is about feeling and 2019’s “Tales People Tell” is an excursion into the heart. But don’t call it retro — it’s right now, as fresh and exciting as a new love.
