The Telluride Society for Jazz (TSJ), a 501(c)(3) organization, presents and hosts musical performances and opportunities for music education within the Town of Telluride and the surrounding region, both during the annual Telluride Jazz Festival and at other times throughout the year.
Our overall goal is to, in partnership with our production partner SBG Productions, produce The Telluride Jazz Festival. TSJ utilizes its net proceeds from the festival, along with grants and charitable donations from the public, to support and expand its educational programs.
Our signature music education program is the Telluride Jazz Student All-Stars. Our other programs include Artist in the Schools programming, the "Society Stage" at Elks Park, scholarships and travel assistance for participants in our new Telluride Jazz Adventure Academy, a cooperative venture with the Telluride Academy, and the presentation of concerts and lectures periodically throughout the year in conjunction with the Palm Arts Center and other local organizations.
Telluride Jazz Festival’s flagship educational scholarship program is the Telluride Student All-Star Jazz Ensemble. Dedicated Jazz students are invited to send audition recordings of their musical skills to program directors Prof. Bob Montgomery and Josh Quinlan. These esteemed jazz performance educators accept elite musicians to travel to Telluride the week preceding the festival to work on compositions and study music together.
Music education is at the core of the Telluride Society For Jazz and prominently on display during the festival weekend. Up-and-coming Jazz music students bring their talent, skills, and knowledge to the Telluride community, sharing them all on the Society Stage at Elks Park. These intimate and interactive artist sessions will help promote the Telluride Society for Jazz's mission of student education and music outreach. Taking place in the heart of historic downtown Telluride in the grassy outdoor amphitheater at Elks Park, these performances give you a chance to interact with artists and music students, all while learning about jazz culture, history and methods.
The Telluride Jazz Festival teamed up with Caleb Chapman's Soundhouse and Telluride Academy to offer a week-long music education and outdoor adventure academy for students leading up to the festival. The Telluride Jazz Adventure Academy will give students Ages 12+ the opportunity to learn new music skills, collaborate with peers, perform on stage during the Festival and experience outdoor adventure in the beautiful San Juan Mountains.
High School and College Bands and Ensembles are invited to participate in the Telluride Jazz Festival. This program offers students travel subsidies, food, lodging, general and backstage admission to the Town Park so they may have the opportunity to interact with jazz legends and experience the production side of the event.
