Endea Owens is all about jazz. This phenomenal bassist, composer and performer has made her mark on the scene since graduating from Juilliard in 2018 and joining Stephen Colbert’s house band Stay Human. Take note of the cats who have mentored her: Marcus Belgrave, Rodney Whitaker, and Ron Carter. As an in-demand player, Endea has toured and performed with Wynton Marsalis, Jennifer Holliday, Diana Ross, Rhonda Ross, Solange, and Jon Batiste to name but a few.

The Motor City native’s style taps into her hometown roots for the groove and her profound love of jazz for heady explorations that absolutely take flight. Check out her 2022 NPR Tiny Desk appearance for a taste of the joy she exudes when she plays. Live performances with her band The Cookout feature horns, a full rhythm section, and vocals, delivering a live experience a reviewer with the Edinburgh Music Review called “gutsy, boisterous” playing with “power, pace, poise and an injection of fiery, interwoven dissonance.”

The Cookout is not only her ensemble but is the name of the non-profit – Community Cookout -she established in 2020 to help feed New Yorkers in underserved neighborhoods. The charitable organization has fed more than 3,000 hungry souls and has staged dozens of free concerts. Endea also shares her passion for music with students around the world, teaching the intricacies of the genre to burgeoning musicians. Her latest album, Caught Up In This Illusion, is a collaboration with Juicy J that hums and pops with innovative jams, hip-hop passion, and big ideas. In other words, she cooks!
